During his pregame introduction against Arkansas on Saturday, Brandon Miller, a 6’9″ freshman basketball star from Alabama, caught people’s attention with his pre-game ritual. One of the bench players would simulate a police pat-down before Miller would head to mid-court. Sources have reported that this ritual has been in place throughout the year.
After the game, Alabama head coach Nate Oats apologized in his post-game interview, calling the ritual “not appropriate,” although he had not yet watched it.
During a recent preliminary hearing, Detective Branden Culpepper of Tuscaloosa provided key testimony shedding light on Miller’s involvement in the events leading up to the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Jamea Jonae Harris. According to Culpepper, Miller brought a gun to Darius Miles on the night of the shooting after Miles texted him requesting it. The testimony has raised questions about Miller’s involvement and relationship with Miles, although it is unclear whether Miller was aware of Miles’ intentions. Given the high-profile nature of Miller’s career as a basketball player, the case has garnered widespread attention.
It’s worth noting that last year during the college recruiting process there were rumors that Miller might be going to the University of Kentucky before ultimately committing to the Crimson Tide. As a freshman for the Tide, Miller, a talented 6-foot-9 forward, is projected to be an NBA lottery pick in the 2023 draft. This year, he is averaging 19.5 points, 8 boards, nearly two assists, and shooting 46.6% from the field for Alabama.
The Tide are projected to be a number 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
As of now, Miller has not been charged with a crime, and the story is still developing.
