The No. 5-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team is gearing up for an exciting weekend ahead as they return to their home court at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena. On Friday night at 7 p.m., they will face off against Duke, followed by a Sunday afternoon clash against North Carolina at 1 p.m. Sunday’s game will also serve as Senior Day, adding an extra layer of emotion to the match.
The Cardinals currently hold a strong record of 21-3 overall and 12-2 in the ACC. They had a mixed performance over the weekend, suffering a defeat against No. 10-ranked Georgia Tech, but bouncing back with a victory over Clemson. These results have placed the Cardinals in a four-way tie for first in the league alongside Pitt, Georgia Tech, and Florida State.
Throughout the weekend’s matches, the Cardinals showcased a well-rounded attack. Charitie Luper, playing as an outside hitter, led the charge with an impressive stat line of 25 kills, four aces, 10 digs, and two blocks. Aiko Jones, the opposite hitter, made her presence known with 23 kills, four aces, nine digs, and four blocks. Anna DeBeer, also an outside hitter, contributed 21 kills, 3 aces, 12 digs, and one block. Elle Glock, the team’s setter, played a crucial role with a total of 92 assists, including a career-high 52 against Clemson. Libero Elena Scott showcased her defensive prowess with 36 digs, including an outstanding 24 against Georgia Tech, and also added five assists.
Looking ahead to their matchup against Duke, the Blue Devils hold a solid record of 17-8 overall and 8-6 in the conference. They have been on a winning streak, having won five straight matches. However, Louisville swept Duke in their previous encounter last month, and they will be looking to repeat their success. Duke’s offense is led by outside hitters Kerry Keefe and Gracie Johnson, who have amassed 313 and 302 kills, respectively. On the defensive end, libero Madison Bryant and middle blocker Jess Robinson have been instrumental, with Bryant contributing 341 digs and Robinson collecting 100 blocks throughout the season.
In their Sunday afternoon showdown against North Carolina, the Tar Heels hold a record of 11-12 overall and 5-9 in the ACC. Louisvillle previously defeated North Carolina in four sets last month. This will be Head Coach Mike Schall’s first season at the helm, and he will be looking to make an impact against the Cardinals. Notable offensive players for the Tar Heels include outside hitters Mabrey Shaffmaster and Emani’ Foster, who have recorded 283 and 244 kills, respectively. Libero Maddy May has been a key contributor on defense, amassing 328 digs.
