Louisville Men’s Soccer Team Faces Notre Dame in ACC Championship Quarterfinals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – This Sunday, the University of Louisville men’s soccer team will embark on a challenging match against second-ranked Notre Dame in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championship. The highly anticipated game is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. ET and will be televised on the ACC Network.

In their last outing, Louisville secured an exhilarating 2-1 double-overtime victory against Pitt in the opening round of the ACC Championship. Mason Tatafu netted the first goal in the 104th minute, while Damien Barker John struck a sensational goal from beyond midfield in the 105th minute, ultimately securing the game-winning goal.

This upcoming match holds great significance for Louisville. The Cardinals have competed in seven ACC Championship quarterfinal matches, boasting a record of 3-1-2. However, they have not advanced past the quarterfinals since they emerged as victors in the 2018 ACC Championship.

The winner of this highly anticipated match will advance to the semifinal round, where they will face the victor of the Duke and Clemson matchup on Wednesday.

Sunday’s game will mark the 25th showdown between Louisville and Notre Dame. The Irish currently lead the series with a record of 13-9-2. Notably, the Cardinals obtained their first-ever victory in South Bend last season with a resounding 2-0 scoreline.

This will be the third meeting between Louisville and Notre Dame in the ACC Championship. In 2018, the Cardinals triumphed over the Irish, securing a 1-0 victory in the quarterfinal round en route to winning the championship. They clashed once again in the quarterfinals of the 2021 edition, but the match ended in a scoreless draw, leading to Notre Dame advancing on penalties.

Louisville’s offensive prowess has been remarkable this season, as their attacking force ranks among the top 20 nationally with 34 goals. A key factor in determining the Cardinals’ success lies in the shot totals. Head Coach John Michael Hayden’s team has an unblemished record of 9-0-1 when they outshoot their opponents and a perfect 8-0-0 when they record more shots on goal.

Notably, Louisville managed to secure their first win of the season despite losing the shot battle in their recent matchup against Pitt in the opening round of the ACC Championship.
