In a thrilling announcement, the University of Louisville men’s soccer team has secured a coveted at-large berth in the NCAA postseason. The Cardinals, who have become a regular presence in the tournament, will begin their journey by hosting Dayton in the opening round at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium on Thursday.
This will mark the 15th NCAA appearance for the Louisville men’s soccer program, an impressive record that has been amassed in just 17 seasons. Under the guidance of head coach John Michael Hayden, the Cardinals have qualified for the postseason in three consecutive years and four out of the last five seasons.
Adding to the excitement, the 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship will culminate with the prestigious College Cup, which will be hosted at Lynn Family Stadium, the home ground of Louisville City FC and Racing Louisville FC.
Louisville has a strong history in the NCAA Tournament, with an overall record of 16-13-2. When playing matches at home, the Cardinals have an impressive record of 13-7-2. Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium has also been a formidable setting, with a record of 6-5-1 in NCAA Tournament matches.
The Cardinals have enjoyed significant success in the past, having reached the NCAA quarterfinals on five occasions. Remarkably, they achieved three consecutive quarterfinal appearances from 2010-2012 and consecutive appearances in 2016 and 2017. The team’s deepest tournament run ended with a runner-up finish in the College Cup in 2010, a testament to their skill and determination.
During the 2023 regular season, Louisville posted a commendable 11-5-3 overall record. They also showed their mettle by reaching the semifinal round of the ACC Championship, proving their ability to compete against formidable opposition.
