Cardinals Stay Undefeated in ACC with Win against Wake Forest

The Louisville women’s basketball team continued their dominant performance in the ACC with an 83-62 victory over Wake Forest. The Cardinals, currently ranked 15th in the nation, remain undefeated in conference play at 4-0.

Louisville showcased their depth on offense, with six players scoring in double-digits. Jayda Curry and Olivia Cochran led the charge with 12 points each. Curry also contributed with two rebounds, one assist, and two steals, shooting an impressive 5 for 6 from the field. Cochran had a solid all-around game, adding three rebounds, four assists, and a steal, while going a perfect 6 for 6 from the free-throw line.

The Cardinals were efficient from the field, making 55.4% of their shots, and were also successful from beyond the arc, converting on 63.6% of their three-point attempts.

Louisville got off to a strong start, going on a 12-5 run early in the game while applying pressure on defense and forcing turnovers. Wake Forest fought back and closed the gap to one point at 20-19 by the end of the first quarter. Both teams had five turnovers in the opening period.

However, the Cardinals regained control in the second quarter, going on an 8-0 run highlighted by two three-pointers from Merissah Russell. They extended their lead to 46-27 at halftime after a dominant 24-4 run. Louisville’s defense held Wake Forest to just 3 for 11 shooting in the second quarter, while forcing seven turnovers.

The third quarter was a more evenly contested period, with Wake Forest outscoring Louisville 14-13. However, the Cardinals ended the quarter on a high note with a 7-0 run, including a buzzer-beating half-court shot from Jayda Curry to give them a commanding 66-41 lead heading into the final period.

Both teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter, but Louisville maintained their lead. Elif Istanbulluoglu contributed five points and three rebounds, while Alexia Mobley added two points and four rebounds to secure the 83-62 win for the Cardinals.

Looking ahead, Louisville will hit the road for a two-game stretch next week. Their next game will be against the Clemson Tigers in Clemson, South Carolina on Thursday, January 18. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
