Louisville men’s basketball showcased their defensive prowess on Wednesday, dominating Coppin State with a final score of 61-41 at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals held the Eagles to a mere 28% shooting from the field and a paltry 17% from beyond the arc. Louisville’s stalwart defense limited Coppin State to 41 points, the lowest allowed by the Cardinals since their game against Central Arkansas in 2018.
Head coach Kenny Payne expressed his satisfaction with the team’s defensive performance, stating, “That is a good sign of what we are capable of being defensively.” Despite the 20-point victory, Payne believes there is still room for improvement, emphasizing the team’s need to focus on their confidence, work ethic, and energy. He acknowledged the team’s potential to defeat formidable opponents but stressed the importance of each player understanding their responsibilities and obligations for the team’s success.
The Cardinals took control of the game during a crucial moment in the first half, embarking on a 9-0 run that propelled them to a 30-19 lead with 3:14 remaining. Their momentum carried into halftime, with Louisville holding a comfortable 32-21 advantage. The team continued to dominate in the second half, extending their lead to 40-23 with another 8-0 run. The Cardinals maintained their double-digit lead throughout the game, reaching a maximum of 22 points with 1:21 left on the clock. Coach Payne utilized his bench effectively, allowing 14 players to see action.
Sophomore guard Tre White played a pivotal role in Louisville’s victory, contributing six consecutive points during the first-half run. White also achieved his first career double-double, amassing 10 points and 12 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard/forward Mike James added 12 points, while sophomore guard Skyy Clark and freshmen Curtis Williams and Ty-Laur Johnson each chipped in with significant scoring contributions.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, White noted, “I feel like as a unit we’re playing a lot more like how we play in practice.” He attributed their success to improved synergy, emphasizing their ability to share the ball and play at a quick pace on the court. Clark echoed White’s sentiments, highlighting the team’s enhanced defensive connectivity and improved ball movement in the second half.
Coppin State’s Justin Winston led their scoring effort with 13 points, but it was not enough to overcome Louisville’s stifling defense throughout the game.
Having secured their victory at the KFC Yum! Center, Louisville will now venture outside their home arena for the first time this season. They are set to participate in the 2023 Saatva Empire Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project presented by Continental Tire. Their first tournament game will take place against No. 19/17 Texas on Sunday at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Basketball enthusiasts can catch the action on ESPN.
