In an impressive performance, freshman guard D.J. Wagner of the Kentucky men’s basketball team has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. Wagner’s outstanding performance came in UK’s upset win over No. 9 North Carolina, where he contributed 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists.
With this accolade, Kentucky extends its record-breaking number of weekly SEC honors during the John Calipari era. The school has amassed a total of 128 honors, including 97 SEC Freshman of the Week awards and 31 SEC Player of the Week honors. Alongside Wagner, Reed Sheppard has also earned the distinction of Freshman of the Week once this season.
Wagner played a crucial role in Kentucky’s victory, leading the team with 35 minutes on the court against the Tar Heels. His six rebounds marked a season-high for him, showcasing his prowess on the glass. Wagner exhibited efficiency with his shooting, hitting 42.9% from the field and an impressive 50% from beyond the arc. Additionally, the Camden, New Jersey native showcased his playmaking abilities with five assists and also managed to secure a steal in the win.
Kentucky’s dominance on the glass was evident as three players, including Wagner, grabbed at least six rebounds, ultimately outrebounding North Carolina by a margin of 42-32. Wagner’s contribution extended beyond scoring and rebounding, exemplified by his steal, as Kentucky’s stifling defense forced the Tar Heels into committing a season-high 17 turnovers.
Through the season thus far, Wagner has been a consistent performer for the Wildcats, averaging 12.8 points, 2.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
Next on the schedule for Kentucky is a matchup against Louisville on Thursday, which will be their first true road test of the season. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. ET, and the game will be aired on ESPN from the KFC Yum! Center.
