Football Around the Commonwealth

The season is winding down with a few teams still fighting for a post-season spot

by Tomas Clark

We’re back with our look at football programs around the Commonwealth.  Lots of good football being played so check out a game in your area if you have the time.  As usual if you have any more info on how to follow the programs mentioned just reach out.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

WKU went on the road and snapped their two-game losing streak with a 21-13 win over UTEP.  It was an ugly game as WKU trailed 3-0 at HT but RB Elijah Young rushed for 139 yards and 2 TD to get the Tops a crucial win.  Western is now 5-4 overall and 3-2 in CUSA.

WKU is back at home this weekend to take on a good New Mexico State team.  The game kicks off at 3:30pm ET and can be streamed on ESPN+ if you can’t make it to the stadium.

Eastern Kentucky Colonels

The Colonels scored a TD with 11 seconds left to force OT but fell 33-30 to 14th ranked Austin Peay.  Parker McKinney threw for 396 yards and 3 TD but it unfortunately wasn’t enough.  EKU is now 4-5 overall and 3-1 in UAC play.  The loss likely ends any hope of making the FCS playoffs for the Colonels.

EKU will now head out on the road to take on 24th ranked Central Arkansas.  The game kicks off at 5pm ET and can be streamed on ESPN+.

Murray State Racers

The Racers lost at home to 12th ranked North Dakota 45-31.  Murray was competitive and a 4th quarter TD from DJ Williams to Cole Rusk made it a on possession game but couldn’t get over the hump.  The loss drops the Racers to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the Missouri Valley.

Murray State will now head on the road to take on Illinois State.  Game kicks off at noon ET and can be streamed on ESPN+.

Morehead State Eagles

Morehead was blown out at home 49-7 by Butler.  Part of me wonders if this was due to all the travel, but it was an ugly afternoon for the Eagles.  They are now 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the Pioneer.

Morehead is back at home this weekend as they take on Davidson.  The game kicks off at 1pm ET at Jayne Stadium.  It can also be streamed on ESPN+ if you can’t make it to the stadium.

Kentucky State Thorobreds

Kentucky State finished their season with a 20-10 loss to Central State.  It was a defensive game with the Thorobreds having multiple chances in the 4th quarter to take the lead.  Kentucky State ends the season 3-7 overall and 2-6 in SIAC play.

Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers

KWC had a huge road win over Lake Erie as they erased a 17 point 4th quarter deficit to win 43-37 in OT.  The Panthers scored twice in the final 5 minutes with former Central Hardin star Deonco Wilkerson catching a TD with 20 seconds left to force OT.  Wilkerson also scored the game-winning TD in OT on an 8-yard run.  KWC is now 4-6 on the season and 3-5 in conference play.

Kentucky Wesleyan finishes their season at home this weekend against Ashland.  The game kicks off at 4pm CT/5pm ET at Steele Stadium.  If you cant make it to the stadium you can find a stream here.

Thomas More Saints

Thomas More lost their fourth straight game as they lost on the road to Northwood 24-20.  The Saints had a 20 point lead at HT and then proceeded to not score a single point it the 2nd half.  Northwood took the lead with about 5 minutes to go to drop the Thomas More to 4-6 on the season and 3-5 in the GMAC.

Thomas More will close out it’s season at home against Lake Erie this Saturday at Republic Bank Field.  Game kicks off at noon ET and a stream can be found here.

Centre College Colonels

Centre went on the road and beat Hendrix 47-29.  Former Lexington Catholic star Jack Gohmann threw for 366 yards and 4 TD as the Colonels pulled away in the 3rd quarter.  Centre is now 5-4 overall and 5-2 in the SAA.

Centre will close out it’s season this weekend at home against Birmingham-Southern.  The game kicks off at 1pm ET at Andy Frye Stadium in Danville, KY.  If you can’t make it to the game a stream can be found here

Campbellsville Tigers.

Campbellsville lost at home 36-14 to 8th ranked Bethel. Former Boyle Co. star Jagger Gillis threw for 320 yards but 3 INT was too much to overcome for the Tigers.  Campbellsville dropped to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the Mid-South Conference.

Campbellsville will close out their season on the road against 6th ranked Georgetown.  The game kicks off at 1:30pm ET and a stream can be found here.

Georgetown Tigers

The 6th ranked Tigers pulled away from Cumberlands winning 31-17 this weekend on the road.  Former Frederick Douglass star Darius Neal rushed for 201 yards and 2 TD as the Tigers continued their march to the NAIA postseason.

Georgetown will close out it’s regular season as they host Campbellsville this weekend at Toyota Stadium at 1:30pm ET.  If you can’t make it to the stadium, you can check out a stream here.

Cumberlands Patriots

Cumberlands ended a disappointing season with a 31-17 loss to 6th ranked Georgetown.  That Patriots competed but were always going to need a clean game to get a win and they didn’t get that.  2 INT from QB Jay Roberts were just too much to overcome.

Cumberlands ends their season 6-4 overall and 2-4 in Mid-South Conference play.

Pikeville Bears

Pikeville closed out their regular season with their 4th straight win beating St. Andrews 68-0.  QB Lee Kirkland threw for 379 yards and 7 TD while the Bears had two WR go over 100 yards receiving (Derrick Griffit and Diego Soto).  Pikeville finishes the season 7-3 and 5-1 in the AAC.  Unfortunately, they didn’t get the help they needed to win the conference as Reinhardt defeated KCU this weekend as well.  There are 7 at-large bids awarded for the postseason but it is very unlikely that Pikeville would get consideration.

Union College Bulldogs

Union lost on the road to Bluefield 20-12.  RB Omarion Parks rushed for 113 yards, but the Bulldogs only scored one TD that came in the 1st quarter.   The loss drops Union to 3-6 on the season and 2-3 in the AAC.

Union will close out it’s season at home this weekend against Kentucky Christian.  The game kicks off 1:30pm ET in Barbourville, KY.

Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders

The 11th ranked Raiders saved their post-season hopes with a big 45-2 win at home over Cumberland (TN).  LWC held Cumberland to under 200 yards of total offense and forced 4 turnovers.  QB Ethan Cash threw 4 TD and the Raiders rolled from start to finish.  They improve to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the Mid-South.

This weekend is essentially a playoff game for LWC as they go on the road to take on 8th ranked Bethel.  If the Blue Raiders win, they will likely be in line for an at-large spot in the NAIA playoffs.  The game kicks off at 1pm CST/2pm ET.  Unfortunately, it appears there is no free stream as Bethel’s service requires a subscription but that can be found here.

Kentucky Christian Knights

KCU lost 56-0 to 21st ranked Reinhardt.  Former Moore HS star Jamari Wilson rushed for 176 on a shocking 41 attempts but not much else went right for the Knights.  KCU drops to 1-9 on the season and 1-4 in the AAC.

The Knights will close out their season on the road at Union. Game kicks off at 1:30pm ET.
