In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the Kentucky Wildcats defeated the Baylor Bears 25-18, 25-22, 25-17 in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament. Led by senior Reagan Rutherford with 14 kills and freshman Brooklyn DeLeye with 13 kills and 10 digs, Kentucky dominated the match. Kentucky hit an outstanding .500 as a team, compared to Baylor’s .258. Junior Emma Grome contributed 45 assists, while junior Eleanor Beavin led the defense with 13 digs.
The Wildcats came out strong, winning the first set 25-18 and hitting an impressive .583. In the second set, Kentucky hit .467 with 19 kills, securing the win 25-22. They continued their dominance in the third set with 16 kills, sealing the sweep with a score of 25-17. Baylor had 34 kills in the match, with Elise McGhee leading the way with 15 kills and Allie Sczech adding eight kills. Setter Averi Carlson had 28 assists for the Bears.
Kentucky’s impressive performance earned them a spot in the regional next week, with the location yet to be determined.
After the game, Kentucky head coach Craig Skinner expressed his pride in the team’s performance and acknowledged the importance of the senior players. He also credited the team’s offensive game plan and the depth of their attacking options.
