On Saturday night, the Warren Central Dragons got a 64-60 victory over defending champions George Rogers Clark to win the UK Healthcare Sweet 16 state championship. This was a big victory for the Dragons, who had lost 43-42 to GRC in the championship game last year.
Damarion Walkup, Kade Unseld and Omari Glover led the Dragons with 17 points each, displaying an impressive offensive performance throughout the game. Although the Cardinals fought hard to come back, they were never able to catch up, trailing 52-42 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Jerone Morton of GRC contributed 23 points, six rebounds, and six assists in the championship game, displaying an impressive individual performance. However, Warren Central’s strong offensive performance, shooting 55% from the field, 54% from 3-point range, and making 11 out of 15 free throws, helped them secure their victory.
Warren Central was a steady hand in keeping control of the ball, committing only six turnovers throughout the game. This helped them hang on to their lead and prevent the Cardinals getting back in the game.
The Dragons’ victory marked their 26th consecutive win and an overall record of 36-1. Earlier in the day, GRC defeated Frederick Douglass 51-44, while Warren Central held off Woodford County 56-48 in the semifinals. The finals drew an impressive 11,664 fans, making it the best-attended Kentucky High School Athletic Association Boys’ Sweet 16 since 2014.
Over the four-day event, a total of 99,565 people attended the games at Rupp Arena. That’s great news for the state of Kentucky and good for small businesses all over the state.
