The University of Louisville women’s swimming and diving team had a strong showing at the 2023 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, finishing in fourth place with a total of 288 points. This is the highest number of points the Cardinals have ever scored at the championships, a testament to the team’s hard work and dedication throughout the season.
Louisville made five podiums, with five first-team All-American performances, as well as two honorable mention All-American awards. Gabi Albiero and Christiana Regenauer both earned All-American honors in the 100 freestyle, while Abby Hay earned All-American honors in the 200 butterfly. In the 400 free relay, the team of Albiero, Regenauer, Julia Dennis, and Ella Welch finished in third place with a time of 3:09.57.
Despite not taking home the national championship title, the Cardinals can be proud of their performance at the championships. The University of Virginia claimed the title with 541.5 points, followed by the University of Texas with 414.5 points and Stanford University with 333 points.
In individual events, Liberty Williams scored in the timed final of the 1650 with a ninth-place finish, dropping 8.31 seconds from her entry time. Paige Kuwata also competed in the event, touching in at 16:31.94 in her heat. The event was won by Alabama’s Kensey McMahon, who posted a time of 15:43.84 to win both distance events at the meet.
Paige Hetrick had a strong showing in the 200 backstroke, touching second in the consolation final with a time of 1:51.90. The event was won by Stanford’s Claire Curzan, who turned in a 1:47.64.
In the diving events, Else Praasterink finished eighth on the platform with a score of 270.70. Delaney Schnell of Arizona took top honors with a score of 352.65.
The University of Louisville women’s swimming and diving team can look back on the 2023 NCAA Championships with pride and satisfaction. They demonstrated their skill and talent on the national stage, and set a new record for points scored at the championships.
The men’s 2024 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will take place next Wednesday in Minneapolis, and the Cardinals will surely be eager to continue their success in the pool.
