During a ceremony in Lexington on Sunday night, Reed Sheppard and Haven Ford were named Kentucky’s Mr. and Miss Basketball winners. These awards are given to the top high school basketball players in the state who are seniors.

Reed Sheppard, a 6-foot-2 guard from North Laurel High School who has signed with the University of Kentucky, won the Mr. Basketball award. He had an outstanding season, averaging 22.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 8.5 assists, and 4.0 steals.

He helped his team to a 25-11 record and a Sweet 16 appearance before losing to George Rogers Clark in the first round. Sheppard’s remarkable shooting ability contributed to his success, making 39.3% of his three-point shots (103 out of 262) and 89% of his free throws (113 out of 127).

In addition, he finished his high school career with 3,727 points after joining the North Laurel varsity team as a seventh-grader. ESPN ranks him as the No. 21 prospect in the nation in the Class of 2023.

Haven Ford, a 5-6 guard from Rowan County High School who has signed with Murray State, won the Miss Basketball award. Although she is a junior, Ford’s remarkable season of 26.1 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 5.2 steals earned her the title.

She played an essential role in leading her team to a 24-8 record before losing to Ashland Blazer in the first round of the 16th Region Tournament. Ford joined the Rowan County varsity team as a seventh-grader and finished her high school career with an impressive 3,325 points and 1,458 rebounds. She was a first-team Courier Journal All-State selection as a sophomore and junior.

Sheppard and Ford were among the other finalists for the awards, with each player putting forth a strong case for their selection. However, Sheppard and Ford stood out among the rest of the nominees, and their achievements are deserving of recognition.
