One can never underestimate the contributions that bench players make to a team. You don’t see them much in games and they rarely are interviewed after games. There just isn’t enough of a story to cover them on a game-by-game basis. But, on Senior Night, we wanted to share some career highlights and background on one of our favorite Kentucky Wildcats.
Brennan Canada, a 6’5″ guard for the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team, has been on the roster for 4 years now. Though he has only played in a limited number of games so far in the 2022-23 season, Canada has already shown flashes of his old high school days where he scored 1,371 points at George Rogers Clark.
In a game against South Carolina St. on November 17th, 2022, Canada put up a season-high 3 points, knocking down a 3-pointer and a field goal. Despite playing only 2 minutes against North Florida on November 23rd, Canada managed to make a 3-pointer, showing off his shooting range.
Canada’s statistics for the season so far show that he is averaging 0.8 points per game in 8 minutes of play, with a field goal percentage of 33.3% and a 3-point percentage of 100%. I bet he’s the only Wildcat on the team shooting that percentage. Okay, we are having fun here. But, while his numbers may not jump off the page, his dedication to the Wildcats for 4 years has been a fan favorite and everyone knows this guy can ball. He just didn’t get the chance at Kentucky.
Looking at Canada’s career statistics, he has appeared in a total of 20 games for the Wildcats, averaging 0.5 points per game. His career shooting percentages of 57% from the field and 25% from the free-throw line may not be the most impressive, but his ability to space the floor and knock down a shot or two when given the opportunity is a valuable asset to the team.
Not to mention he’s knows the program well. After four years on a team, traveling all over the US and knowing how the coaching staff operates, there is no doubt that this kid may just return down the road as an assistant under Coach Cal or, possibly, become a head coach somewhere in the NCAA.
Hailing from Kentucky, Canada had a stellar high school career. As a George Rogers Clark alumni, he tallied an impressive 1,371 points and 776 rebounds, leading his team as captain for two years. In his senior season, he earned All-10th Region First Team honors with an average of 15.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, achieving double-digit scoring in the final three years of his high school career. He recorded 13 double-doubles in his final year and was named All-District Team and All-District Tournament Team three times. His team clinched two District 40 championships, and in 2019, they were runners-up in the 10th Region.
The Cats take on Vandy tonight at 7pm and it’s Senior Night. Maybe Brennan will get some playing time. Let’s hope!
