LEXINGTON, Ky. – In an exciting announcement, Kentucky men’s tennis and head coach Cedric Kauffmann have revealed that Taha Baadi will be joining teammate Tate Sandman as a captain for the upcoming 2024 spring season. Baadi, a standout player for the Wildcats, has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and is set to play a pivotal role in guiding the defending SEC Tournament Champions.
Coach Kauffmann expressed his confidence in Baadi’s abilities, stating, “Taha has clearly emerged as one of the leaders of our group. He brings it every day and pushes his teammates to be better on and off the court. He is a tremendous representation of what Kentucky is all about and is a joy to be around. We have the utmost confidence in Taha to serve as one of our captains this season.”
Part of Baadi’s success is attributed to his consistency, work ethic, and drive, which has impressed the coaching staff. Associate Head Coach Matthew Gordon remarked, “Taha is a special person who sets the standards with his consistency, work ethic, and drive. He has the ability to bring up others with him and has the mentality needed to be a great leader.”

Baadi, a fifth-year transfer from Wake Forest, is currently entering his second year with the Wildcats for the 2023-24 season. Last year, he made a significant impact and was named to the All-SEC Second Team in 2023. With a spring singles record of 19-8, predominantly playing at the fourth position, Baadi displayed his prowess on the court. Additionally, he led the team with eight clinches, including two crucial ones during Kentucky’s NCAA Tournament run to the national quarterfinals. Baadi’s skills were also showcased in doubles, where he partnered with Alafia Ayeni at the No. 1 spot and played 20 matches. His accomplishments were recognized when he was named SEC Athlete of the Week on February 8, 2023, following the Wildcats’ 4-3 upset over No. 1 Virginia.

Excited about his new role as captain, Baadi expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am incredibly proud and honored to be named captain of one of the best teams in the country. I am fully committed to preserving the Kentucky blue culture that our campus takes so much pride in. The love and support from my team and this school have been truly humbling. I am grateful for all that this school has given me, and I can only give my all in return.”
