LEXINGTON, Ky. – In a well-deserved accolade, Kentucky swimming & diving sophomore Ryan Merani has been named Co-SEC Men’s Swimmer of the Week. The announcement came from the conference on Tuesday. Merani shares the award with Alabama’s Charlie Hawke and Georgia’s Ian Grum.
Merani illustrated his prowess in the pool by winning three individual events during the Wildcats’ dual meet against the Crimson Tide. The Lutherville Timonium native emerged victorious in the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 200 butterfly, amassing a meet-high 27 points. Notably, Merani set a new season-best time in the 400 IM, clocking an NCAA B-standard of 3:45.98.
Over the course of the events, Merani showcased his dominance, securing wins with a combined margin of victory of 6.54 seconds. On average, he outpaced his opponents by a considerable 2.18 seconds per victory. In addition to his individual triumphs, Merani also contributed to UK’s success by competing on both the 400 free relay and the 200 medley relay. The former secured second place, while the latter claimed third.
This recognition marks Merani’s first SEC Swimmer of the Week honor of his collegiate career. However, he previously earned the title of SEC Freshman of the Week on January 31, 2023.
