UK Athletes Match School Record for NCAA Graduation Success Rate

by

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky is celebrating their student-athletes for tying the school record for Graduation Success Rate in the annual report issued by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. This achievement reflects the university’s commitment to the academic success of their student-athletes.

Kentucky’s NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for the freshman classes of 2012-13 through 2015-16 was an impressive 92 percent, matching the record set in each of the past three years. This continuous improvement showcases the dedication of the student-athletes and the unwavering support from the coaching staff and the CATS (Center for Academic and Tutorial Services).

Not only did Kentucky tie their school record, but their GSR of 92 percent also surpassed the Division I national average of 91 percent. This accomplishment further solidifies the university’s commitment to higher education for their student-athletes.

The GSR includes students-athletes who are on scholarship during their first semester of enrollment. Transfers or athletes who turn professional in good academic standing do not count against the school’s GSR. Additionally, incoming transfers and January enrollees who subsequently graduate also contribute towards the GSR.

The 19-year history of the measure for UK Athletics reveals a steady increase in GSR scores, with 2023 marking yet another year at 92 percent. This upward trend exemplifies the university’s dedication to academic excellence within their athletic programs.

In addition to the GSR, the NCAA also released the school’s Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) for the freshman classes from 2013-14 through 2016-17. UK’s FGR stands at 62 percent, which considers factors such as transfers and athletes leaving early for professional opportunities.

Furthermore, the university broke another record with 167 student-athletes receiving diplomas or certifications in the 2022-23 academic year alone, highlighting the significant achievements of these individuals in their academic pursuits.

It is not just in the classroom where UK student-athletes are excelling. They have consistently achieved a department-wide grade-point average of 3.0 or higher for 22 consecutive semesters, surpassing the department’s goal.

The University of Kentucky’s commitment to the holistic development of their student-athletes shines through their exceptional academic achievements. With the support of their coaches and the resources provided by the university, these athletes continue to excel both on and off the field.
