The Kentucky Wildcats track and field team competed in the SEC Indoor Championships over the weekend. The team had a successful weekend with several personal bests.
Track & Filed stand out star Masai Russell recently made history by breaking both the SEC Championships and Facility Records in the 60-meter hurdles. Russell won her first conference title with an impressive time of 7.77 seconds. She was just short by .02 seconds of her personal collegiate record set in Lubbock, Texas in late January.
Another standout performances of the weekend came from Jacob Sobota, who competed in the Heptathlon. On Friday, Sobota set a season-best time in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.43 seconds and earning 877 points. On Saturday, he placed third in the Pole Vault, clearing a height of 15’7” (4.75m) and earning 834 points. In the final event of the Heptathlon, the 1000 Meter, Sobota finished 11th with a time of 2:50.61, earning 759 points. Overall, Sobota finished 8th in the Heptathlon with a total of 5478 points, earning one point for the team.
In the Women’s High Jump, Mallory Mullen finished 10th, clearing a height of 5’5.75” (1.67m). In the Men’s Shot Put, Josh Sobota placed fourth with a throw of 64’04.00” (19.61m), earning five points for the team. Dylan Allen finished third in the Men’s Mile, with a time of 4:05.26, earning six points. In the Women’s Mile, Phoebe McCowan set a personal-best time of 4:45.82, finishing seventh and earning two points. Sophie Galloway placed ninth in the Women’s Triple Jump, with a jump of 41’8.75” (12.72m).
In the Men’s 60 Meter, Jordan Anthony finished second with a time of 6.57 seconds, earning eight points for the team. Wayne Lawrence Jr. was unable to finish the Men’s 400 Meter. In the Men’s Triple Jump, Luke Brown set a personal-best jump of 54’09.25” (16.69m), finishing fourth and earning five points. Jordan Palmer also competed in the Men’s Triple Jump, finishing 15th with a jump of 47’00.25” (14.33m).
In the Women’s Shot Put, Simisola Akinrinsola placed 18th with a throw of 43’01.25” (13.14m). DeAnna Martin finished fifth in the Women’s 800 Meter, with a time of 2:05.83, earning four points. In the Women’s 60 Hurdles, Masai Russell set a new SEC Championship Record and Facility Record with a time of 7.77 seconds, earning 10 points for the team. Yasmin Brooks finished eighth with a time of 8.24 seconds, earning one point.
In the Men’s 200 Meter, Brandon Miller set a personal-best time of 20.68 seconds, finishing sixth and earning three points. Kennedy Lightner finished seventh with a time of 20.73 seconds, earning two points. In the Men’s 3,000 Meter, Jake Allen finished 26th with a time of 8:26.59. In the Women’s 3,000 Meter, Tori Herman set a season-best time of 9:12.21, finishing third and earning six points.
In the Men’s 4 X 400 Meter Relay, the team of Brandon Miller, Kennedy Lightner, Brandon Nyandoro, and Justin Swann were unable to finish the race. In the Women’s 4 X 400 Meter Relay, the team of Karimah Davis, Masai Russell, Christal Mosley, and Dajour Miles were disqualified.
Masai Russell:
Masai Russell is a senior at the University of Kentucky and is currently one of the top hurdlers in the country. She has had an impressive career thus far, earning several accolades and setting multiple records along the way. In 2019, she was named the SEC Freshman Runner of the Year, and in 2021, she won the SEC Indoor Championship in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.93 seconds. This year, she broke the SEC Championship record and the facility record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.77 seconds, earning her 10 points and the title of SEC champion.
Jacob Sobota:
Jacob Sobota is a junior at the University of Kentucky and is a multi-event athlete, competing in the heptathlon and decathlon. He has had success in both events and is a key member of the Wildcats track and field team. In the heptathlon, he recently placed 8th at the SEC Indoor Championships with a total score of 5478 points. He also had a season-best time of 8.43 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, and a personal-best height of 15’7″ (4.75m) in the pole vault, placing 3rd in the event. Sobota’s performances have contributed to the Wildcats’ success this season.
Dylan Allen:
Dylan Allen is a redshirt senior at the University of Kentucky and is a distance runner specializing in the mile and 3000 meters. Allen has had a successful career at Kentucky, earning All-American honors in cross country and setting personal bests in both the mile and 3000 meters. In the mile, he recently placed 3rd at the SEC Indoor Championships with a time of 4:05.26, earning him 6 points for the Wildcats.
DeAnna Martin:
DeAnna Martin is a senior at the University of Kentucky and is a middle-distance runner specializing in the 800 meters. Martin has had a successful career at Kentucky, earning All-SEC honors in the 800 meters and setting a personal best time of 2:04.80. This year, she placed 5th in the 800 meters at the SEC Indoor Championships with a time of 2:05.83, earning her 4 points for the Wildcats.
Brandon Miller:
Brandon Miller is a freshman at the University of Kentucky and is a sprinter specializing in the 200 meters. Miller was highly recruited out of high school and has lived up to expectations thus far in his collegiate career. He recently set a personal best time of 20.68 seconds in the 200 meters, placing 6th in the event at the SEC Indoor Championships and earning 3 points for the Wildcats. His time ranks him 4th on the UK indoor all-time list in the event.
Overall, the Kentucky Wildcats track and field team has a long and storied history of success. The program has produced numerous All-Americans and Olympic athletes, and the current team looks to continue that tradition of excellence. Standout athletes like Masai Russell, Jacob Sobota, Dylan Allen, DeAnna Martin, and Brandon Miller should keep the Wildcats at the forefront of the SEC this year.
