During a last nights game between the Kentucky Wildcats and the Florida Gators, there was a close call that could have turned dangerous. Kentucky guard Cason Wallace was pursuing a loose ball when he crashed into a trio of Florida fans seated courtside. As he tried to get back up, the fans appeared to try and hold him back, with one of them even grabbing him by the neck. Fortunately, all three fans were ejected, but this incident could have ended much worse for Wallace, who could have sustained an injury. Overzealous fans are starting to become more of a problem across all levels of sports and something needs to be done to address these situations to keep the players safe on the court.
This season has been challenging for the Kentucky Wildcats, with a 19-9 record and no current ranking. They need to finish strong to secure their prospects of making it to the NCAA Tournament. Every game is crucial, and their eight-point win over Florida was significant. However, this close call could have had severe consequences for both Wallace and the team.
Although Wallace had a rough game against Florida, finishing with only two successful shots out of seven attempts and committing six turnovers, he has been one of Kentucky’s most reliable players throughout the season. His consistent performance on the court has been instrumental in the team’s success, and they will need him in top form if they hope to make a deep tournament run. As a freshman, Wallace is currently averaging 11.7 points, 4.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game, with a shooting percentage of 35.1 percent from beyond the arc. He is also an essential factor in the team’s defense, playing a consistent role at the point of attack.
It is highly likely that Wallace will become a one-and-done player for the Wildcats, as he is predicted to be a lottery pick and is currently ranked seventh on various NBA draft boards. However, he still has a few more weeks to build his legacy at Kentucky and hopefully make some tournament magic, regardless of whether he stays with the program for more than one season.
Kentucky is making some waves heading into the end of season stretch with Joe Lunardi hinting that the Cats could make a run deep into the tourney. The Cats return to action on Saturday when they host the Auburn Tigers at 4pm.
