The University of Louisville has announced the passing of Felton Spencer, a former standout player for the university and a longtime NBA center. Spencer was 55 years old at the time of his passing, and details regarding the circumstances of his death have not been released.
Spencer played for Louisville from 1986-1990 and was instrumental in leading the team to three consecutive Metro Conference tournament wins and two Sweet 16 appearances. His senior season saw him achieve career-best averages of 14.9 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, and his impressive shooting record of 62.8% from the field remains a program record.
After being selected as the No. 6 overall pick in the 1990 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Spencer played for various teams including the Utah Jazz, Orlando Magic, Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, and New York Knicks before retiring in 2002. Throughout his 12 seasons in the NBA, Spencer averaged 5.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in 604 games.
Following his retirement from professional basketball, Spencer returned to his hometown of Louisville and worked as an assistant coach at both Spalding University and Bellarmine University. Spencer’s contributions to both the university and the sport of basketball will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike.
