The University of Louisville has announced its latest signing, Ty-Laur Johnson, who will be joining the men’s basketball team in the 2023 class. Johnson played his high school basketball at Our Saviour Lutheran School in the Bronx, New York, where he averaged 18.4 points, 5.7 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game in his senior year. He also had six games where he scored at least 20 points and an impressive season-high of 31 points.
The 6-foot guard began his junior season playing for St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, where he averaged 26 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals and was recognized as an honorable mention selection to MaxPreps’ 2021-22 Junior All-America Team. He shot 38% from 3-point range while his team finished 25-1 and was ranked sixth in the final National Top 20.
Johnson has also been a standout on the AAU circuit, playing with the New York Renaissance, where he averaged 16.7 points, 6.1 assists, and 2.9 rebounds overall and was named as the MVP of the EYBL’s Louisville session. He earned First Team All-Peach Jam honors after scoring 21.7 points, six assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.4 steals per game.
UofL head coach Kenny Payne expressed his excitement about adding Johnson to the team, praising his character as a high-character young man who fights to win. He believes Johnson has the grit and determination to reach his potential and become a great asset to the team. Louisville fans can expect to see Johnson’s fighting spirit and determination on the court come game time.
The University of Louisville men’s basketball team has a rich history, having won three NCAA national championships in 1980, 1986, and 2013. Louisville has produced players such as Wes Unseld, Darrell Griffith, and Russ Smith, who have all gone on to have successful NBA careers. The team represents the University of Louisville in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and plays its games at the KFC Yum! Center in downtown Louisville.
