How The Transfer Portal Works | What You Need To Know

The NCAA Transfer Portal is a private database that contains the names of student-athletes who have expressed an intention to transfer from their current school to another school in any NCAA sport at the Division I, II, and III levels. The database is not accessible to the public and is only available to NCAA coaches and administrators who have been authorized to access it.

The process of entering the transfer portal begins when a student-athlete provides written notification of their intent to transfer to their school’s compliance office. Once the compliance office receives the notification, they enter the student-athlete’s name and information into the transfer portal database, and the process begins.

Once a student-athlete’s name is in the transfer portal, other schools can contact them about the possibility of transferring. The student-athlete is free to explore their options and communicate with other schools about the possibility of transferring. They can change their minds at any point and withdraw from the portal. However, once a student-athlete enters the transfer portal, their current scholarship is no longer guaranteed. This means that if they decide to stay at their current school, their scholarship may not be renewed for the upcoming academic year.

The transfer portal database is searchable and sortable by various criteria, including sport, name, and other factors such as scholarship status and graduate student status. Each student-athlete’s entry includes basic information such as their contact information, sport, and status as a scholarship or walk-on player.

Student-athletes also have the option to request a “do not contact” tag to be placed on their entry in the transfer portal database. This means that other schools are not allowed to contact them unless the student-athlete initiates the communication.

The NCAA Transfer Portal was established on October 15, 2018, and the new calendar cycle begins each August. During the 2020-21 cycle, 2,626 FBS football players entered the transfer portal, while 1,833 Division I basketball players entered during the same cycle. These numbers have been steadily increasing in recent years, indicating a trend towards more student-athletes transferring between schools.

Overall, the NCAA Transfer Portal is a valuable tool for student-athletes who are looking to transfer to another school. It provides a centralized database of transfer candidates that other schools can use to identify potential new recruits. However, it also comes with certain risks, such as the loss of a guaranteed scholarship if the student-athlete decides to stay at their current school.
