According to reports online, former Texas basketball coach Chris Beard is being considered for the head coaching position at Ole Miss. Beard was fired by Texas in January due to pending felony assault charges that were later dropped in February. Despite the controversy surrounding him, Beard is expected to be in high demand in the coaching market this offseason.
Ole Miss is looking to replace Kermit Davis, who was fired last month after finishing 13th in the SEC for two consecutive years and posting a 10-18 record in 2023. Despite any potential baggage, Ole Miss is interested in Beard because of his proven track record of winning. In his eight seasons as a head coach across three programs, Beard has a career record of 244-171 and has led his teams to five NCAA Tournament appearances.
Although Beard’s coaching abilities are undeniable, the question remains whether his off-the-court drama is worth the risk. However, with head coaching changes happening quickly in college basketball, it is likely that we will soon find out where Beard will end up.
