Is Willie Cauley-Stein Back On An NBA Roster?

Willie Cauley-Stein

Willie Cauley-Stein has signed a 10-day contract with the Houston Rockets. WCS hasn’t played in an NBA game this year and has been seeing playing time in the G-League with the Rio Grande Vipers.  The Houston Rockets are now planning on calling him up to sign a 10-day contract.

On the Rockets he’ll join former Kentucky Wildcat’s Player TyTy Washington.  Another former Wildcat just left Houston and went to the Clippers but now finds himself back in Houston when a trade was worked out with the Clippers.  And, it’s unclear if Wall has been cut or will remain on the roster.  I can’t seem to figure it out.  Strange, I know.

It’s not certain if the Rockets will keep WCS on the roster long term but they need a rim protector and WCS is one of the best in the league when he does get minutes on the court.  WCS hasn’t seen much playing time on recent rosters. He was moved to the Sixers in 2021-22 where he only got playing time in two games.  The prior year he was on the Dallas Mavs roster where he was teamed up with Luka Doncic but was limited to rotation minutes for the Mavs.

Maybe there is a bigger play here after all. The Rockets could give him some playing time and get his numbers up and minutes up.  Then use him as trade-bait down the line. Or, a contender may pick him up down the line to fill a roster spot going into the playoffs should the Rockets not keep him active. Hard to say.
