In an exciting matchup, the University of Kentucky women’s golf team is set to take on Indiana in a spring dual on Sunday, January 28th at the Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando, Florida. The event will kick off at 7:30 a.m. ET.
While most of the team will be in attendance, senior Laney Frye will be wrapping up her time at the LPGA Drive On Championship in Bradenton, Florida. However, the rest of the Wildcats are ready to go head-to-head against the Hoosiers in match play.
Leading the way for Kentucky will be Marissa Wenzler, Jensen Castle, María Villanueva Aperribay, Marta López Echevarría, and Brooke Oberparleiter. Meanwhile, Abigial Sutherland and Cathryn Brown will compete in stroke play.
What makes this matchup unique is the familiarity between the two programs. IU head coach Brian May, a Kentucky native, previously served as UK’s assistant coach under Golda Borst for eight seasons, including their historic NCAA Championship appearance in 2021.
This highly anticipated spring season will feature four tournaments before the Southeastern Conference Championship in Belleair, Florida, and the hope for a successful postseason run.
The Wildcats are coming off a fantastic fall season, boasting a team stroke average of 290.0 (+2.0) and two top-five team finishes. Notably, they recorded an impressive 832 (-20) in their season opener at the Cougar Classic, which stands as the third-best tournament total in program history.
Kentucky players have shown their skills, producing 21 rounds at par or better, including 11 rounds in the 60s. Additionally, the team had six individual top-20 finishes, with four of them securing a spot in the top 10.
Unfortunately, live scoring will not be available for this informal event. However, fans can stay updated by visiting UKathletics.com for a recap of the matchup on Sunday evening.
