In a recent announcement, the Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball program will be commemorating the 10th anniversary of their 2013 championship victory with a new banner to be raised at the KFC Yum! Center. Louisville AD, Josh Heird, confirmed the banner will read “2013 Final Coaches Poll #1” instead of any reference to the 2013 National Championship.
Heird stated that the decision to raise a banner with this verbiage was made after “productive communication with the NCAA staff and Committee on Infractions” and expressed his gratitude for the NCAA’s guidance in this matter. This development comes after the NCAA’s ruling on the infractions case against Louisville last November, where the team avoided major penalties.
This announcement has excited Louisville fans on social media who were previously vocal about the possibility of raising the 2013 banner. It is worth noting that in June of 2017, Louisville’s 2013 national championship was vacated due to a sex scandal involving former head coach Rick Pitino.
Aside from the banner raising, the Cardinals will also be hosting Clemson in a home game on Saturday, Feb. 18. Fans can expect various promotions and recognitions honoring the 2013 championship team throughout the game.
Before their game against Clemson, the Cardinals will also be playing Virginia at home on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game against Clemson is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. EST as well. With the new banner and festivities in the works, the Louisville men’s basketball program continues to honor their past accomplishments while looking towards a bright future.
