The ACC has announced that El Ellis, the senior guard for Louisville men’s basketball team, has been named the ACC Co-Player of the Week. This is the first time Ellis has received the weekly award in his career, and he is the first Cardinal to earn Player of the Week honors since David Johnson received the accolade on December 28, 2020.
Last week, Ellis recorded an average of 24.5 points and 4.5 rebounds across two games. He played in 78 out of the 80 possible minutes in both games and had a shooting percentage of 55% from the field, 50% from 3-point range, and 85% from the free-throw line. In Saturday’s game against Clemson, he scored 28 points, leading the Cardinals to a victory on the night when the program honored its historic 2013 team. Against Virginia on Wednesday, he scored 21 points, had four rebounds, and made three assists.
Ellis has now scored 82 points in his last three games, averaging 27.3 points per contest. He is among five Cardinals since 1992 to record a season with at least 485 points and 123 assists. Furthermore, his scoring average of 18.0 points per game is tied for the fifth-highest by a Louisville player since 1992.
This is the second weekly award of the season for the Cardinals, following Redshirt freshman Mike James‘ recognition as Rookie of the Week on January 9. Louisville, with Ellis leading the way, will be playing Duke at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, marking a homecoming for Ellis.
