Former Iona Gaels head coach Rick Pitino agreed to a 6 year deal with St. Johns of the Big East this week. But the biggest story so far is the rivalry between Rick Pitino and John Calipari that has been ongoing since the 1970s. Calipari attended a basketball camp where Pitino was a participant, and their relationship developed over the years. In fact, Pitino helped Cal get his first coaching job at UMASS.
Although they have a history, Calipari and Pitino share a deep-rooted on-court rivalry. Calipari has got the best of Pitino in the last 8 of 10 matchups. Is there a chance that Calipari will schedule a St. Johns matchup on a neutral court next year? BBN is waiting…
Pitino is the only coach to win a national title at two different schools, take three different schools to the Final Four, and take five different schools to the NCAA Tournament. Cal is the only other active coach to reach the Final Four with three different programs. Pitino believes he can win right away with the Red Storm and has between five and eleven years to get back to the Final Four to surpass Calipari.
