Sahvir Wheeler Injury Update & Senior Night

Is something going on with Sahvir Wheeler?

Tonight is Senior Night in Big Blue Nation.  The Cats are set to host the Vanderbilt Commodores. But one Wildcat is going to be mysteriously absent; Sahvir Wheeler

According to head coach Calipari, Wheeler has undergone a “minor surgery, unrelated to his ankle injury” that will have him sidelined for a while and absent from the Senior Night festivities. Possibly out indefinitely.

Wheeler has been absent since “tweaking an ankle in practice” early in February and hasn’t played since February 4th against Florida where he played 25 minutes and scored 8 points.

While the Cats have been on a run without him, he’s still a good kid and could provide some good backup minutes for Wallace. Looks like Thiero will have to step up and handle the rock a little more at point. While that sucks for Wheeler, these extra in-game, high pressure minutes for Thiero could prove to be invaluable down the line into the tournament and for the Wildcats for next season. He’s going to be a breakout star at Kentucky if he doesn’t transfer, which we don’t see happening but, you never know.

Even though Wheeler is a senior, he has one more year to play college basketball. But with the high-profile recruits coming in next year, DJ Wagner, Reed Sheppard and Dillingham, he may not find any minutes on the court. He may be better off transferring. Also, Antonio Reeves and CJ Fredrick have an additional year and could possibly be coming back. I think they both come back. The Kentucky Program has a lot of national eyes on it so it only makes sense if they want to improve their draft stock. Even though I don’t believe they are ready for the NBA right now, the league loves shooters. If these two guys can have a good shooting year next year then another year at the college level could improve their draft stock. So, this could get messy if Wheeler stays.

Not sure how this one is going to unpack but we’ll see. With all the drama this year with the Wildcats it should be interesting. Either way, he’s out for Senior Night and according to some sources won’t even be in Rupp.
