Wednesday night is Senior night for the Kentucky Wildcats as they host the Vanderbilt Commodores and one of the players being honored is Sahvir Wheeler.
Wheeler hasn’t played in a game since the Cats faced Florida at Rupp Arena on February 4th. He’s been out with an ankle injury he suffered in practice.
On Monday night Coach Calipari said on his weekly radio show that “The doctors are telling him how to proceed” and they are keeping him informed. But it looks like the Cats will be without Sahvir’s talents on Wednesday. With one game left after Vandy the last chance Wheeler has to get some minutes in before the SEC tourney is against Arkansas. And, that may not even happen.
The Cats have seen Cason Wallaces’ minutes rise and the load on him has been heavy. Adou Theiro has been able to step up and give some relief but his handles aren’t nearly as evolved as Wallace. Also back in the rotation was CJ Fredrick. He saw limited minutes in the last game against Auburn so he may be able to give Wallace a breather from time to time.
The Wildcats need Wheeler back in the rotation even if it is 10 minutes a game so Wallace can get some rest. The Cats have been playing better without Wheeler running the point but he could give some valuable minutes down the stretch and help the Cats make a deep run into the NCAA Tournament.
