Are The Cardinals About To Land A Big Piece For Next Years Roster?

A 2023 recruit committed to University of Minnesota, Dennis Evans, may land in Louisville if Kenny Payne and crew have their way. The 7’1” big man is ranked in the top 10 best center prospects in the country.

Evans has asked to be release from his national letter of intent with the Golden Gophers. Speculation online is that the school doesn’t have many NIL deals and there are many opportunities in Louisville Kentucky. If Evans did come to the Cards he would be joining an already somewhat crowded front court with Wheeler, Huntley-Hatfield and rapidly developing Okorafor. There is also a rumor going around that KP and Co are in the running for another big with NBA Arica Academy candidate Churchill Abass.  But if Evans is available and shows interest in the Cardinals then they may want to scoop him up.

With the front court getting loaded up the Cards really need help in the backcourt.  El Ellis has been throwing around that he may return for another year with the Cards.  It’s been reported that he is considering coming back for another year and he himself has said the same.

Transfer Portal?

The transfer portal has become a valuable tool for teams in the recent years. Some solid lineups have been created by adding one or two experienced players through the portal.  Look at in-state rivals the Kentucky Wildcats. They added Oscar Tshiebwe and he’s turned into a beast.  Adding an experienced guard in the back court to take some pressure off Ellis would go a long way in making the Cards a feared team next season.

The Cards have really nowhere to go but up after KP’s arrival.  They are currently one of the worst team records in college basketball.  But KP was thrown into a mess. Payne is a UofL alumni and played in the NBA as well. He’s got a fairly deep coaching staff full of former players like Danny Manning and Nolan Smith.  The future players on the roster should gain plenty of knowledge from these former players and that should go a long way in turning this Cardinals program around.

With ticket sales down at YUM Center I’m not sure they give KP more than next year to fix this mess.
