Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis came up short in his attempt to break “Pistol Pete” Maravich’s record of 3,667 points in a game against top-seeded Youngstown State in the Horizon League quarterfinals. The game ended with the Titans losing 71-66, and Davis scored 22 points, leaving him just four points shy of breaking the record.
Davis, a fifth-year guard, is currently the second all-time leading scorer in Division I men’s basketball history and holds the record for the most 3-pointers made in a career. He went 7-for-25 from the field (4-for-15 from three-point range) and had five turnovers and four fouls in the game.
Davis struggled in the first half, as Youngstown State’s defense was able to limit him to just seven points, shooting 3-for-9 from the field (1-for-3 from beyond the arc). However, Davis picked up his scoring in the second half and ended up with 15 points. Despite his efforts, the Titans could not close out the Penguins, who took the lead with just 1:29 left in the game.
Throughout the game, updates on Davis’ progress towards breaking Maravich’s record were given. Five minutes into the game, Davis was 23 points away from the record, and just over five minutes in, he was 25 points away. At halftime, he was still 19 points away from breaking the record, and with just over two minutes left in the game, he was only five points shy of tying it.
In the end, however, Davis was unable to make history, and his last-ditch effort to tie the game with a three-pointer fell short, bouncing off the rim and backboard before being caught by Youngstown State’s Brandon Rush.
While Davis came up short in his attempt to break Maravich’s record, he still had an impressive college career, finishing as the second all-time leading scorer in Division I men’s basketball history.
