Cardinals Baseball Win Big Against Cincinnati With Long Ball Hits

The University of Louisville baseball team won 14-1 against Cincinnati on Tuesday night. The team only needed seven innings before the game was called due to the mercy rule. Jack Payton got Louisville’s first home run in the second pitch of the game. He wasn’t done yet though – the sophomore scored another two homers in the second inning of the game.

Matt Klein and Christian Knapczyk each hit two-out RBI singles, bringing the score to 6-0. Eddie King Jr. added another three-run homer, his second of the season this time. Cincinnati’s only score was in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly but Payton soon answered again. He tallied an RBI in the fifth inning, pushing the Cardinals into double digits.

In the sixth inning, Matt Klein scored his first home run as a collegian. Kade Grundy got the start for the Cards and only allowed one run on three hits over 3.2 innings. Riley Phillips, who came in as a substitute, did brilliantly. Phillips struck out six of the eight batters he faced within 2.1 innings of work without conceding any runs.

Louisville will now face NC State in its second consecutive road ACC weekend in Raleigh, N.C. Fans can follow Louisville baseball through their Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram accounts. Jack Payton hit two homers in the second inning alone and Matt Klein had home run for his first time in college.
