The Kentucky Wildcats basketball team has recently suffered a significant blow with the announcement that their starting point guard, Sahvir Wheeler, is entering the transfer portal. Wheeler has been a crucial part of the Wildcats’ team, and this loss will be felt deeply.
Wheeler began his college career at Georgia, where he had an impressive freshman year, averaging 9.0 points per game and 4.5 assists. His sophomore year was even more outstanding, as he averaged 14.0 points per game and an SEC-leading 7.4 assists per game.
In his debut season at Kentucky, Wheeler continued to shine, averaging 10.1 points per game and leading the SEC with 6.9 assists per game. He earned All-SEC second-team honors and was a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, given to the nation’s top point guard.
However, Wheeler’s senior season was tumultuous. After an up-and-down start, he suffered an ankle injury and then underwent an unspecified minor procedure, causing him to miss the remainder of the season. Although he hoped to return for the NCAA Tournament, he was ultimately ruled out by head coach John Calipari.
Despite the difficulties, Wheeler showed improvement as a shooter, hitting 36.6 percent from three. Now, he is looking for a new home for his final year of college eligibility, with TCU, Oklahoma State, and Kansas State being among the potential landing spots.
The loss of Wheeler will undoubtedly be felt by the Wildcats, as he brought dynamic play and strong leadership to the team.
