Kentucky's Jacob Toppin Finds His Shot, Could Lead Team to NCAA Tournament

Kentucky’s senior forward Jacob Toppin struggled on the offensive end, particularly with his three-point shooting, at the beginning of his highly anticipated senior season. In the team’s first 13 games, he made only three out of 22 three-point attempts, resulting in a 13.6% shooting percentage. However, Toppin’s fortunes changed during the game against LSU on January 3 when he hit a crucial three-pointer with 1:24 remaining in the game, giving the team a four-point lead and helping them secure a 74-71 victory.

Even LSU head coach Matt McMahon acknowledged Toppin’s struggles and was not disappointed with his team’s defense for giving Toppin the opportunity to score. McMahon praised Toppin’s performance, saying that despite his poor three-point shooting record, he hit the crucial shot to seal the game.

Since that game, Toppin’s three-point shooting has dramatically improved, making him one of the best three-point shooters in the SEC. He has scored ten out of 19 three-point shots in the 15 conference games, giving him a 52.6% shooting percentage. When asked about his improved performance, Toppin attributed it to his new mindset, which focuses on not worrying about the shot and playing his natural game.

Toppin’s improved shooting has helped lead Kentucky to two Quad 1 wins, further bolstering their NCAA Tournament resume. He hit a three-pointer in the win against No. 10-ranked Tennessee and scored two out of three three-point shots against Florida, including a deep shot that gave the team a nine-point lead with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

Toppin’s all-around game has also improved, making him an elite rebounder and a threat on the offensive end. He has averaged 6.6 rebounds per game, recorded six double-doubles, and scored at least ten points in 11 straight games. His performance has helped Kentucky secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Coach John Calipari praised Toppin’s improved game, saying that he is now a dangerous threat who can make threes when given the opportunity.

Although freshman Chris Livingston has been the center of attention lately, Toppin’s improved performance, particularly his three-point shooting, has been a significant factor in Kentucky’s success.

Kentucky returns to Rupp Arena Saturday at 4pm where they host the Auburn Tigers.
