Louisville's El Ellis All-ACC Honorable Mention, Hints at Potential Return

Louisville’s El Ellis received an All-ACC Honorable Mention by the league’s 75-member panel on Monday. While no player from Louisville’s men’s basketball program made it to any of the three All-ACC teams, Ellis came incredibly close. He received 50 points, the most votes by an Honorable Mention player, and was just four votes behind Syracuse’s Jesse Edwards and Virginia’s Reece Beekman for the final spot on the All-ACC Third Team.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound combo guard has been a standout performer on Louisville’s otherwise lackluster season. Ellis scored an impressive 17.7 points per game during the regular season, which landed him in second place in the ACC, just behind Wake Forest’s Tyree Appleby.

Additionally, his 4.35 assists per game ranked him eighth in the league. Ellis also demonstrated some respectable shooting abilities, with a 41.3 percent field goal rate, 32.2 percent success rate on three-point attempts, and 80.9 percent free throw success rate.

Ellis, who hails from Durham, N.C., was honored during the senior day festivities earlier this season. However, he still has one year of eligibility remaining, thanks to an optional COVID waiver. Ellis has not ruled out a potential return to the Cardinals for the 2023-24 season, as he recently stated in a media interview. He intends to “test the waters” and make a decision on whether to come back based on how everything unfolds.

With his steady performance this year, he may test the NBA draft waters. We don’t have him going in the draft. He’s likely a player that will end up in the G-League if he does decide to go pro. It’s probably best that he either returns to Louisville and make improvements or transfer out to another school that is in need of an experienced combo guard where he can have a shot at getting an NCAA championship.
