On Tuesday, the Associated Press announced that Kentucky senior forward Oscar Tshiebwe had received All-SEC First Team honors from the conference’s media. This comes after he was also awarded the same honors from the conference’s coaches on Monday. Tshiebwe was a unanimous media selection, along with Alabama’s Brandon Miller and Texas A&M’s Wade Taylor IV.
Tshiebwe’s consecutive All-SEC First Team honors from the media make him the first Wildcat to achieve this since Tayshaun Prince in 2001 and 2002. Tshiebwe’s impressive statistics include leading the country with 13.1 rebounds per game and averaging 16.4 points per game. He has achieved six 20-point, 15-rebound games this season, and he had seven such games in the previous season. He is the only player in the country who has maintained an average of 15 points, 10 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game.
In only 63 games for Kentucky, Tshiebwe has already earned a place in program history by ranking eighth with 894 rebounds. He has achieved a double-double in 46 of these games, which places him third in program history, only behind Dan Issel and Cotton Nash. His career average of 12.1 rebounds per game puts him in an elite group of players, including Paul Millsap and Kenneth Faried.
Tshiebwe’s season started with a minor knee procedure, but he has since recovered and continued to excel on the court. He has led the Wildcats in scoring 14 times, rebounds 25 times, and blocks on 11 occasions. Kentucky earned a double-bye and will play their quarterfinal matchup at approximately 9 p.m. ET on Friday against the winner between Vanderbilt and the winner of LSU and Georgia.
