In his freshman year at Rhode Island, Toppin appeared in all 30 games and made three starts. He immediately became a key contributor to the team, averaging 5.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He showed his ability to stretch the floor with 13 3-pointers and scored in double figures five times. His standout game came against Richmond when he recorded a career-high 12 points with eight rebounds.
