During a recent meeting at the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament in Nashville, the Presidents and Chancellors of the Southeastern Conference approved future regular season schedule and post-season championship formats for seven Southeastern Conference sports. This decision was made in preparation for the anticipated inclusion of Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC in the 2024-25 athletic year.
The approved regular season schedule formats were for baseball, gymnastics, and men’s and women’s swimming & diving. Additionally, championship formats were approved for gymnastics, swimming & diving, indoor track & field, and the return of the SEC Volleyball Tournament which has been on hiatus since the 2005 season. Previous regular season schedule and championship formats were already in place for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, and softball. The current regular season and championship formats for the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, equestrian, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field were deemed sufficient to accommodate the addition of Oklahoma and Texas without additional adjustments.
However, regular season formats for football and volleyball, as well as the post-season tournament format for baseball, are still to be determined.
The regular season format for baseball will consist of each team playing a three-game series against two permanent opponents and eight rotating opponents, totaling 30 conference games, with standings kept in a single-division format. The format for the SEC Baseball Tournament is yet to be determined.
For gymnastics, each school sponsoring a gymnastics team will meet every other member institution at least once a year on an alternating home and away basis, with an additional week required to accommodate nine teams.
In men’s and women’s swimming & diving, the Conference Office will schedule two dual meets per program, and each institution will be responsible for setting the dates and times of the meets.
The championship format for SEC Swimming & Diving Championships will remain the same, with updated facility requirements.
Each school sponsoring an indoor track and field team will schedule teams from other Conference institutions at their own discretion for the regular season, and the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships will now be a three-day format instead of the previous two-day event.
As for volleyball, the regular season format is yet to be determined, while the SEC Volleyball Tournament will be held for the first time since 2005. All Conference teams will participate, and it is still undecided if the SEC Volleyball Tournament will resume after the 2024 or 2025 season.
