In a thrilling comeback, the Kentucky women’s basketball team secured their 900th win in program history by defeating Lipscomb 87-80. Trailing by double digits just before halftime, the Cats found themselves in a tough spot. However, Maddie Scherr’s incredible long three at the halftime buzzer not only cut the deficit to nine points but also provided valuable momentum for the team going into the second half.
Scherr led the charge for Kentucky, scoring an impressive 25 points. Saniya Tyler also showcased her skills, setting her career high in points for the second consecutive game with 22. Amiya Jenkins had a standout performance as well, achieving a career high of 20 points for the Cats.
The second half saw Kentucky heat up on the court, shooting an impressive 64 percent from the floor. In the fourth quarter alone, they sunk 78.6 percent of their shots, allowing them to secure the win.
The Cats started off strong, establishing an 8-4 lead after a three-pointer from Cassidy Rowe and a basket from Petty. However, Lipscomb quickly turned the tables, grabbing an 11-8 advantage by scoring the next seven points. They would go on to lead by as many as nine points in the first quarter, ending the period with a 25-20 advantage.
Although Kentucky cut into the deficit early in the second quarter, Lipscomb answered with a 12-point run, extending their lead to 41-28. However, the Cats used the long ball to their advantage just before halftime, with Jenkins and Scherr sinking threes to reduce the halftime deficit to 46-37.
In the third quarter, Kentucky continued to chip away at the lead, with Scherr leading an 8-3 run to bring the Cats within six points. Although Lipscomb remained in control, leading 63-56 heading into the final quarter, Kentucky refused to back down.
The Cats came roaring back in the fourth quarter, mounting a 10-2 run to get within one point of Lipscomb, 67-66. Tyler then scored on a drive to the basket and converted a three-point play, giving Kentucky a 69-67 lead with 5:46 remaining. Although Lipscomb tied the game at 69-69, Kentucky responded with a layup from Miles and two free throws from Scherr to take a 73-69 lead with 4:33 left on the clock. They closed out the game with a 12-4 run, securing the hard-fought victory.
Kentucky’s next game is scheduled for December 31st against Samford at the Clive M. Back Center on the campus of Transylvania University. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. ET, and fans can catch the action on SEC Network Plus.
